MIDNIGHT LACE (1960)
A "terrorized wife" mystery that bears an odd resemblance to the earlier "Dial M For Murder" (1954) by Alfred Hitchcock.
Both films come from plays, are set in London, have sweet wives and suave husbands. In both, actor John Williams plays the CID Inspector and Anthony Dawson the villain for hire. Here Doris Day is married to British entrepreneur Rex Harrison. John Gavin has something like the role (with a twist) of Robert Cummings in "Dial M." Certainly not as good as its predecessor but watchable. The 1954 film paired off the classy Grace Kelly and Ray Milland as husband and wife. The current couple strikes one as unlikely, yet there is a suprisingly good out-of-character performance by Doris Day. (Edwin Jahiel)
